How We Are Different
The common perception of estate planning is that it is about giving your stuff away when you die, and, if you are rich enough, doing it in a tax efficient way. But that narrow view of estate planning misses much that is important.
We take a broader view, that it is not enough to create a will or a trust. If the plan is going to work the way the client intended, assets have to be re-titled, the personal representatives and trustees have to be educated, and there needs to be an agreement in place to keep things up to date as the law changes and as the family changes.
In this effort, we are guided by certain principles, and we work with clients to avoid the human reasons why legal documents fail. The firm name reflects this difference: legacy planning is estate planning, but it is comprehensive, integrated estate planning – estate planning designed to help clients create estate plans that work.
